An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the safety, security and maintenance of an aircraft. This is a highly dignified and responsible job which is also one of the highest salaried in the technical field. This is a very exciting and innovative job in the world itself. Safety is a very important factor when it comes to aircraft. An aircraft is made of thousands of latest technologies and numerous parts, engines, electrical and electronic systems, etc. With time and use, parts tend to wear and tear, thus regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft are extremely necessary. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are specifically trained to inspect an aircraft, diagnose, report, and finally solve the problems if found. No aircraft can take off without the approval of a licenced AME.

Airline Sector: Airline Sector: An AME Engineer can work as a technical supervisor, leading teams of engineers and technicians. They may also work as engineering managers, such as Work Shop managers, Component Maintenance Managers, General managers, etc. Aviation is one of the main drivers behind globalization, driving the development of the modern world. A network of airlines, airports, and air traffic management organizations link the major cities and small communities of the world 24 hours a day with increasingly advanced aircraft. Aviation supports 65.5 million jobs worldwide and enables $2.7 trillion in global GDP.

Maintenance Repair & Overhauls (MRO): Maintenance Repair & Overhauls (MRO): The rules under the Aircraft Act, 1934 state that maintenance and repair of aircraft should only be done under the guidance of a certified and licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in order to ensure the safety of the aircraft and its components onboard. The induction of each new aircraft opens up huge employment opportunities for AMEs, AMTs, Quality Management Personnel, etc. For aspirants who want to build a career in the field of Aviation, this is the right time to start a career as an AME Personnel as the aviation industry in India and around the world is witnessing massive growth.

Aircraft Manufacturing Companies: As the aviation market is soaring high, airline carriers are demanding new and more aircraft from the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The OEMs, over the years, have been extremely focused on manufacturing more aircraft to meet delivery schedules. Union Civil Aviation Minister has asked aircraft manufacturer Airbus to build planes under the ‘Make in India&’ initiative and contribute to the country’s growing aviation sector. Airbus, currently, has over 300 aircraft flying in the Indian skies. However, there are other aircraft manufacturers in the Indian market also.

An AME aspirant needs to complete the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering course from an institute approved by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation). Students are required to pass all the module examinations conducted by DGCA which is the designated authority. It issues licences only to those candidates who pass the exams as a part of eligibility to get a licence and acquire the maintenance experience as per DGCA CAR 66.

AME is a licencing course offered by DGCA approved institutes while Aeronautical Engineering is a regular 4-year degree course approved by AICTE. Both can be chosen after passing XII with PCM. AME equips one with practical knowledge to keep the aircraft fit to fly whereas an aeronautical engineer studies design, structure, system and aerodynamics to increase flight safety and reduce overall cost. In India, all the engineers in Civil Aviation are required to possess an AME licence as regulated by DGCA CAR 66. In other words, no aircraft can fly without the permission of a licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, compelling all the organisations to recruit AME licence holders in order to maintain the airworthiness of the aircraft. In short, Engineers who did MTech and PhD in Aeronautical Engineering/other engineering are required to obtain an AME licence as per DGCA CAR 66 in order to officially release an aircraft.
